Having been an officer at HMP Wakefield for 12 years in the 70’s and 80’s I started reading this book wondering if it would be another poor representation of prison life. It is not! It is the best book I have read about Wakefield, or any other prison for that matter, due to the authors’ excellent research. It certainly brought back many memories of my time there. I was sorry to read however that the Centre bell is no longer used as it was the ringing of this at certain times of the day that controlled the regime.
